Applied fiction is a narrative design approach in which fiction is not
just used to decorate a lesson or introduce a topic. Instead, the story
becomes a functional part of the learning experience. The fictional
world, the datasets, and the analytical tasks are designed together, so
that progress in the narrative depends on the learner’s ability to
observe evidence, interpret information, and complete meaningful
problem-solving steps. In this model, story and analysis move together:
the reader is not simply told what happens next, but earns the next step
by thinking through the data.
